Since deciding upon the studio, I've been drooling over wallpaper. We're nowhere even close to decorating (we haven't even got the place empty yet) but hey, it doesn't hurt to be prepared, right?

I Quit

2012 so far is shaping up to be a good year.

Today, I quit my job. I cannot express to you just how happy I am to have done so. I liked the people I worked with, it was reasonably well paid but it wasn't what I wanted to do and never was.

Tinging the happiness is an element of guilt, back in 2008 when no one would employ me because I had a website, they employed me as an administrator. When their practice manager left, they asked me to fill the position because they had confidence in me when I had little. With their encouragement, whilst I proved I could do the work just as well as the previous person (and in less working hours), it was just was never what I wanted to do. Working in financial services, we've obviously seen some ups and downs over the past few years and its been a gradual build up of stress and wondering how much more I can cope with, a combination of office politics, company rules and rude clients. The guilt has to be pushed aside because, quite frankly, life's far too short to spend it miserable at work. Over the last few years I've helped out at that family business with various admin items and so that's what I'm going to be doing once my notice period is up.

My hours will still be the same, which means I will still be crafting and working from home. And on that note, my other exciting (to me!) news is that I'm in the process of clearing out an older (and much bigger) room to convert into a studio. I know, you're probably thinking " but she hasn't made anything for ages" and, quite honestly, you'd be right! The stresses and worries of work, together with a lack of space, has meant I've not been making anywhere near as much. So. Watch this space and I'll keep you updated with studio progress.

PS - Photo is Blakeney point, back in 2007. I love this photo, I hadn't long been living in Norfolk and I remember feeling full of hope for the future so it always has those positive connotations with it. Do you have a photo that makes you feel the same?

New Year's Resolutions

It's the 3rd of January. Is it too late to wish you all a Happy New Year? Never mind, Happy New Year!

Do you make any resolutions? I stopped several years ago after I kept failing miserably at dieting and I eventually came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the stress. I think too often we don't think clearly enough about what we expect from ourselves when we make them and then set ourselves up for failure. That doesn't mean that I don't like to take the time to think about the year that's passed and everything that is ahead of me in the coming year.

I came across this website via a friend some time ago and on one of those occasions when I clearly have far too much time on my hands, I had a play. The first few to pop up were:

OK, so its only meant to be a jokey time waster, but I did have a chuckle to myself as they all popped up as they cover pretty much everything I've been thinking about recently.

Focus and Spend less time web browsing: these go hand in hand and are something I'm aiming towards as a goal for me. There's so much I want to do and I have so many ideas but sometimes I just don't know where to start. And we all know what its like, you start off with good intentions of just checking the email and before you know it you've been sucked into Twitter/Pinterest/other and half the afternoon's disappeared. With working and looking after the animals this can be a pretty lethal time suck for me.

Start or actually update my blog: I guess this also ties in with above! Definitely something I'll be working towards.

Be happy and healthy: I've struggled with bouts of depression, or feeling incredibly low, ever since I can remember and so this is something I'm always conscious of and try to work on. The healthy aspect is something else I'm trying to work on too, although this is sometimes easier said than done when health issues keep jumping up to disturb your life. Still, onwards and upwards. So long as I know I'm doing what I can, that's half the battle.

So whilst I've still not made any resolutions, I have a few items that I want to keep to the forefront of my mind and work towards.

Christmas 2011

Hope you don't mind the bullet points but here's what I've been up to over the Christmas break:

Christmas Eve saw us wondering what Christmas Day would hold following a power cut. A power line had fallen in the bad weather but 4 hours later the electricity company had us back up and running.
Christmas Day saw me baking a birthday cake for my sister's 18th. No good photos of it I'm afraid but it was an easy to follow recipe and it was delicious, although too rich/sickly for some of us! (I'm seriously terrible at cooking and baking usually so I cannot tell you how proud I was of myself!)
Sales shopping. It just has to be done. This year I was quite restrained compared to previous years where I've been known to spend half my wages (3 pairs of trousers, a top, undies and a few reduced gift sets for upcoming birthdays).
Hello new red hair!

We took a trip to Ikea. We couldn't believe how quiet it was ( and I couldn't believe how much I spent). There was a reason for going, more soon. In the meantime, here's some of the fabrics I picked up:

Whilst family came to stay we took a long walk along the seafront. It was cold and blustery and gorgeous, just what was needed to get rid of that feeling lazy and full of Christmas food feeling. We also popped into the arcade to play on the 2p machines (last of the big spenders here) and air hockey. My arm still hurts 3 days later. Apparently we're all very competitive.

And that pretty much covers it. However you spent your Christmas, I hope you've enjoyed it!

Growing up

I introduced the guinea fowl to you a while ago and I thought it was about time for an update.

Look how big they're getting!

Now that we've let them loose, they love to explore, particularly the goat hut.

They're happy hanging around with the chickens, particularly if there's food about - you should see how quick they can move!

But it has to be said that they're happiest when they're huddled around Mum, particularly now its getting colder.*

They're not everyone's cup of tea. They're noisy and they aren't the prettiest of birds to look at but I think they're quite cute, in an ugly-cute way.

* Colder: I know its December but BRRRRRRR. The cold I can just about bear, its the bitter winds that we keep getting with it. Now duly wrapped up in thick cardigan, blanket and slippers and that's how I shall spend the weekend no doubt.

Something New

I know, I know. It has been a while since I actually blogged about making something new, rather than playing catch up but look! I've been making Something New.

Yesterday saw me choosing fabrics and cutting out pieces. Note the scissors? I have palpitations every time I use them for these are the ones which I stuck in my hand earlier in the year. I now keep these out of my way and only use them occasionally!

There were a ton of photos to show the different stages but its that wonderful time of year where its grey all day and there's no decent natural light for photos. Sorry about that. I chose a bright orange cotton for the inside and a reasonably thick wadding. Here's the finished piece:

Its the first time I've made a hot water bottle cover and the first time I've used bias binding. All in all I'm really pleased with it - I always get such a sense of relief when I make something new and it turns out as it should! Now that its getting colder, this one's for me, but I might make a few more to pop in one of my shops.

In other news, yesterday saw me pay a flying visit to one of my local charity shops. The one I visited can be a bit hit and miss with stock but they came up trumps again yesterday with this gorgeous floral duvet cover and pillow case set.

Long weekend

Its been a long weekend for me, having had a couple of extra days off work. I'm surprised by how much I've enjoyed it to be honest as most of the time it just passes by in a flash.

Coffee and cake with Amanda, a spot of work for the family business, household and animal related chores, a spot of sewing, photos and updating shops. Its been a busy one!

Goat Keeping : Home Sweet Home!

The day has come! You've been preparing for this and now its time to bring your goats home. We don't have a livestock trailer or access to one, so after chatting to the farm and getting their thoughts we filled the back of the work van with some straw and used that.

We purchased two harnesses and thick weave dog leads to safely secure them. Our harnesses were from Homestead Farm Supplies. If the goats you are bringing home are only 4-6 months old I would recommend you go for the smallest size. We didn't! We got the medium which didn't quite fit them snugly enough, although we managed to make them snug enough for the short journey home with a spot of quick thinking. One the plus side, they should grow into them!
Before you can move the goats, you will need the CPH number I referred to in 'Goat Keeping: Paperwork'. This is used for the Movement Document which will need to be completed to record the movement of the animals from the farm to you and a copy of which will need to be sent to your local animal health department. One very important point which must also be mentioned is that they must be tagged. Have a look at the Defra website for information about goat identification and movement.

Once you get them home, keep them confined for a day to get them used to their surroundings. Because we had to get our boys used to the electric fence we did this slightly differently. We kept them within a closed off area (we used old wooden pallets from work, on their side and screwed together) whilst we were at work and when I came home from work I would let them out. It took them a few days to work out that if they got too close or tried to chew the fence it hurt but they are very weary of it now!

Once home, its also a good idea to get your vet to pop out for a consultation. They can check they're healthy and you can ask any questions you might have (ours did this at a cheap rate as no work was actually carried out).

I can promise you that all the talk of goats chewing everything and nothing being sacred around them is completely true. They think nothing of chasing the geese, much to their disgust. We have to keep the chicken and geese feeders up and out of their way during the day (we put them down first thing in the morning and last thing at night and also give them food during the day, so they don't go without). The chicken huts aren't out of bounds either, particularly if I'm trying to clean them. They will come in and see if you need help (and they won't get the hint if you don't).

All in all though, particularly the first few weeks, don't expect to get much done at home. They adore company and as you get to know each other you'll find you want spend as much time with them as you can, learning all their quirks and just enjoying them.

Make sure you have something for them to do in the garden as well. This sounds daft but they are inquisitive animals and get bored. We have some old tree logs cut up under the trees which they like to climb on and we also made them a small see-saw as they had one in the farm before they came to us - just a plank of wood nailed to a log. We also discovered that ours love a wheelbarrow, particularly if it contains straw. We now have two placed side by side (and weighed down underneath, to stop them falling over when they jump in and out), filled with straw. They love sitting in them, chewing their straw and watching the world go by.

Car Boot Fabric

I found this fabric at a car boot back in the summer and I couldn't believe my luck! There were two large sheets of it (well over 3 metres) and I practically snapped it up when the guy told me how much he wanted. So, I thought it was finally time to use it and I think it matches the embroidery thread quite nicely, although you possibly can't tell that well since the lighting is so poor. Honestly, its rained here all day...

Goat Keeping : What you need

So now you know you're getting your goats, where are you going to keep them and what are you going to feed them?

Housing

I read somewhere that you should allow a minimum of 8ft x 4ft for two goats. Off the top of my head, I can’t remember quite how big ours is but we made it slightly bigger, just ‘incase’. We also added a large store room to one side of it to store bags of food and hay – make sure these are kept securely locked up because they’re incredibly nosy/greedy and really will try to much their way through in no time at all!

Again, google is your friend. Take the time to have a look at how other people house their goats.

Some people leave their goats out all night with a field shelter in their enclosure. This is obviously personal preference but I personally wouldn’t and we found that the farm we purchased from was of the same opinion. Enclosed housing helps them to shelter from the heat or cold or wind and rain (goats hate rain!). Not only that but its also peace of mind for you to know that they’re safe.

Ensure your housing is sturdy because they will itch themselves against the walls and play, knocking themselves into the walls. For bedding you can use wood shavings and straw. Ours push their straw to the corner, underneath the hay rack, and settle down for the night.

As with any animal, it is really important to keep the hut as clean as possible. We give ours a full sweep and clean out once a week with a general clean out as required.

It should also be mentioned that they generally like to sit up off the ground. We have some old straw bales that we’ve popped in to a corner and ours love to jump and sit on there too.

Inside, they will need access to food and water. We have a trough for their feed, a hayrack on the wall. A mineral lick and a bucket held upright inside a tyre.

Feed

Always check what the current owner is feeding them! The bacteria in a goats stomach will react badly to sudden changes in their diet. We have tried ours on a number of different foods, mainly so we can work out what we can use as ~~bribery~~ treats. Our method – Google first to see what information we can find, try them on a small bit and see what the reaction is, check their droppings between then and the next day (as best you can!). If everything looks ok and they like it, its ok!

We were lucky that the farm we purchased our goats from used the same animal feed supplier, which has meant continuity in their diet. They have a small tub full of dry goat mix with a handful of sheep nuts thrown in. They also have access to a hay rack throughout the day. Our boys do seem to prefer eating straw, which the vet has assured us is fine, so we also leave some straw about for them.

You should also ensure they have access to a mineral lick. We use a Rockies Red Mineral Lick, you’ll find they give this a lick now and again.

Nearly everyone I speak to about goats thinks they’ll do a great job of keeping the grass ‘mown’ and destroying the plants and trees. This hasn’t been the case for us! Goats are grazers and will nibble here and there. Ours love the leaves that are currently falling!

A word of warning, its worth having a look at plants and items that are poisonous to goats. Whilst small amounts can be tolerated (so I’m told), others can cause serious illness and even fatality. Leylandi are one such item and we have a hedge that adjoins the neighbours garden. Fortunately it is behind the electric fence and out of their reach.

Other

Other items you’ll need include a collar and lead for transporting them home securely. Its also a good way of keeping control of them for trimming their hooves or vet visits. I haven’t found many goat suppliers out there but I have used Homestead Farm Supplies who were very helpful and also have a reasonable range of products available.

You will need to trim their hooves regularly so make sure you have a pair of garden shears or hoof shears. Its personal preference which you use, the vet said garden shears were fine and so that’s what we use. Trimming the hooves isn’t something I do, I get the task of holding them whilst its done. Our boys will happily sit on my lap like a dog, enjoying a good fuss whilst my boyf trims. Have a look on You Tube for some how to videos or ask your vet who will be more than happy to show you.

Goat Keeping : Paperwork

Being animal mad as I am and the comments I've had from my previous chicken care posts (Winter Wonderland and Looking after chickens and geese in Winter), I thought it would be good to share my experiences in goat keeping. Granted, its still early days but we're now settled into a routine and have gained so much information it seems right to share and I'm planning on doing so in a series of posts.

Please remember, although I'm happy to chat away and share what I know, I'm not an expert! Before we take on any new animals I spend hours trawling through pages on the internet looking for as much information, good and bad, so that we can make an informed decision and can gain as much knowledge about what we are doing as possible. Choosing a breed, knowing the health requirements, potential problems and costs are all important items to consider. If you are thinking of following the goat keeping (or any animal keeping, for that matter!) route, I highly suggest you do the same.

Unlike with chickens, if you decide you want to start keeping goats there is a bit of paperwork that needs to be dealt with beforehand.

Because they are classed as livestock (even if kept as pets) you first of all need to register for a CPH number with The Rural Payments Agency (who work alongside Defra). CPH stands for County Parish Holding. It allows the authorities to track down who holds livestock and where in the case of an outbreak of disease (e.g. foot and mouth).

To get your CPH number you must contact the Rural Payments Agency (“RPA” - 0845 603 7777) who will ask a number of questions about where you are located, who owns the land and how many animals you have (or will have). Once they have your application they will register your details and send paperwork out to you, usually within 10 working days. You will not be able to take your goats home without a CPH number.

At this point, it is also worth looking for and registering with a farm vet as you will need to advise Animal Health of their details. (If you are based in Cambridgeshire or West Norfolk, I can highly recommend Isle Vet Group).

Once you have a CPH number, you will need to contact your local Animal Health Department. The RPA should be able to point you in to the correct Animal Health Department for your area. I’ve found both the RPA and Animal Health to be very friendly and helpful and only to happy to help with any questions you may have, no matter how daft you think they might be! (The questions, that is!). Animal Health will also register your details and will write to you with a herd/flock number, together with a unique customer ID.

My tip:

As the paperwork starts to come through, its worth making up a file to keep it all in a safe place. That way you have everything to hand ready for when you need it. Not only that but if I'm not about and someone else needs to look for a piece of paperwork they can find it easily (particularly important as they will ask for memorable information). I have a large bright pink folder which has various dividers. These are marked up as follows:

Animal Health - notes of phone calls made and received (noting the time, date and name of person I've spoken to). Also contains Movement Licences, which will be explained in a future post.

Chickens - I've listed the names and breeds of our chickens and where they were purchased from, together with a note of any medication they've had or visits to the vets.

Defra - As with Animal Health.

Geese - As with chickens.

Goats - As with chickens and geese.

RPA - As with Animal Health and Defra.

Vets - notes of phone calls made and received (noting the time, date and name of person I've spoken to). Also contains bills which show the work carried out on our animals.

You will need the CPH number for bringing your goats home, which will be explained in a future post about transporting your goats home.

Guinea Fowl

Not long after we got the goats, I received a phone call from a client of where I work. A few months earlier, we had purchased an incubator (more on that another day!) from him and whilst we were there to collect it we chatted about the birds he had. As well as chickens he also had guinea fowl which we were admiring. We all know where this is going, don't we?

He called to say that not long after that he had found a few guinea fowl eggs and had tried to hatch them. The female guinea fowl hadn't taken to the eggs so he had popped them under one of his chickens. When he called they were only 4 weeks old and he wondered with winter approaching if we would like to take them as he knew we had room and was worried about keeping them safe. He said we could have all of the guinea fowl and also keep the chicken. Well. It would have been rude not to, wouldn't it?

We were a little confused mind you, as when we were visiting he told us he wasn't keen on the guinea fowl so I'm not sure why he hatched the eggs when he found them. I think he (possibly) hatched them just for us. Regardless, I was really touched he had taken the time to do so and to ask me to take them.

So now we have another chicken (breed unknown) and 7 guinea fowl, sexes unknown.

They're getting bigger every day and I don't think I've seen them stand still for more than 10 seconds, hence the photos. They dart and fly about through the cage all day, whistling and chirping softly as they do. They love the mornings when my boyf climbs into the cafe, sits on the pallet and feeds them dried mealworms.

They are currently in one half of the cage we used to use for the chickens, which is where they'll stay until they're much bigger, although we'll increase it as necessary. Currently they are in a small boxed off/sheltered enclosure but as its getting colder they'll be moved into a new (to them!) hut.

So, just incase anyone has lost count, that's 10 chickens, 6 geese, 2 goats and 7 guinea fowl. Mad? Me?

PS: Does anyone have any thoughts on what breed the chicken is? I asked on Twitter, someone thought Silver Dorking (which were my thoughts, actually) but apparently the feathers are 'wrong'....

I got further than I expected but for the last few weeks I've been feeling under the weather (nothing too major, hopefully), resulting in appointments and waiting and emotions and various other things distracting me away from blogging. Whilst I've not posted for the last week or so, I've enjoyed having a subject to think and blog about, even if brief, so I'm still pleased that I've taken part and I think I'd take part again.

Suprisingly though, there has, however, been a flurry of making. These few are all available in my Etsy shop, which is now looking a little less empty:

This one is so simple for me!

I've read so many books over the years, that I could have chosen from many characters that stand out for various reasons, whether they are brave detectives or mother's fighting for what's right in the world. but oh no. No.

For me, top of my list has got to be The Simpsons! Really, I have no shame in admitting this!

I've loved watching The Simpsons ever since I can remember and I will happily sit watching the same old episodes. Different lines remind me of different people. My Dad would put it on when I used to visit and Dad, my siblings and I would sit and watch it. Living with my Mum, there was many a night that my brother and I would sit and watch his dvd's. Whilst I don't watch them very often now, there's just a sense of familiarity and comfort, having them on in the background whilst I'm getting on with something else.

So, here's the question. Who are the fictional characters you love?

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a teacher, until my Stepmum pointed out that I would really need to love children if I wanted to, otherwise I would be with children all day at work and then at home if I were to have my own! Looking back through my school notes I then went through a stage of wanting to be a journalist. Then, when I started working as an office junior, I thought I would quite like to be an aromatherapist. I took a step to making this happen in taking a basic diploma in aromatherapy and physiology but life circumstances at the time meant this didn't go any further.

Even now, approaching my 30s, I still don't know what my dream job is or what I want to do! Over the last few years I've thought that if money were no object I'd like to properly train as an aromatherapist and some other complementary therapies and have my own centre offering these treatments.

And recently, I've been thinking how lovely it would be to have my own rescue shelter for various animals, although we seem to be working towards that one! For now though, I'm plodding away in my current office job .

Support Handmade However its Made

Today's #30Days30Lists topic was "My favourite outfits to wear". Seeing as I'm not much of a clothes horse and spend every day in my jeans, I didn't think that would make too much of a list.

So I thought I'd tell you about the Supporting Handmade However its Made ("SSHIM") campaign set up by Diddybears.

Earlier this month, this post was released on the Folksy blog, followed by this forum thread. With over 700 comments you'll see feelings were running high and that doesn't take into account the numerous blog posts and twitter messages flying about. Folksy have since posted a clarification on the blog which has been helpful.

First and foremost, I think the most important thing for me to say here and now is that I think there is nothing wrong with wanting your business to be represented in a particular way. However, I do think that if this is the case it should be policed properly from the start - don't let people add those items to their shops in the first place.

Many jewellery makers have been told they will no longer be allowed to sell on Folksy because their items are considered to be assembled, with no design element going into it. One very important point is being missed here and that is that people will buy the items they want, knowing how they're made!

In the clarification, Folksy say:

I was concerned that my decoupaged items might not meet the grade, but I've received confirmation from Folksy today that I can continue to list them (thank you Folksy) but I know that there's a lot of people who haven't been so lucky. This has been a hard one to think about, let alone write because I really struggle to stay motivated, no matter how much I think I want something And because its something I struggle with frequently, I'm going to think back and refer to things I have wanted in the past and what has worked for me then.

Motivating me in my making - getting sales and getting good feedback motivates me. Seeing how many views an item has had when I've tweeted or blogged it.

Weightloss motivation - in the past I've gone to numerous slimming clubs and done well. And not so well. But the best I've actually done is when I've gone it alone. It takes me a few weeks get into it but I do it by immersing myself, as it were. I surround myself with slimming magazines and articles. I read many blogs, articles and forums, scouring for helpful hints and tips. And I record everything. Weekly weight loss, monthly weight loss, what I've eaten, how I've felt, the exercise I've done etc etc.

I'm sure there's a lesson here somewhere for me. On both points.

Back in this post, I mentioned we were getting some new additions of the non-feathered variety. So on our recent week off work, we spent the time building this:

So, the plans for this weekend are to collect our new pygmy goats and get them all settled into their new home. I'm so excited about bringing them home and I can't wait to see what they make of the chickens and geese (and vice versa)! They were only born in May, so they're very playful indeed - this should be fun!

Bambi reminds me of my stepmum (it has been mentioned on a number of occasions that I’m the only person she know’s to have cried whilst watching it. In my defence, I was about 8).
Portchester castle where we used to go when I visited my Nan.
Mint-chocolate ice-cream reminds me of my Granny.
2p arcade machines (I still head straight to them if we're at the arcardes. I'm such a big spender).
Enid Blyton (Noddy, Famous Five, Secret Seven, Up the Faraway Tree....) and Beatrix Potter books.
Clarks shoes - my Granny always used to buy my school shoes and I'd end up with a patent t-bar style (they still make them, look at these!). Even now I still can't bear the look of patent shoes...
Teddy bear. He's been in my life ever since I can remember. Before me, he'd belong to my Dad and Uncles. After me, he was passed to my brother and sister. I'm (almost) ashamed to admit that I smuggled him back in my teens.

To use my cross trainer 3 times per week (I can always find something else to be doing!).
To make at least 4 new items for my folksy shop (that’s 1 new item a week!).
Workroom – to try and tidy my work room so I can actually find things when I need them (and not a week later).
Paperwork – to sort through the piles of paperwork I have, file them and shred what’s not needed.

We have finally finished the electric fence! That has taken up a huge chunk of our time but its been well worth it for peace of mind. After an initial period of sulking (chickens and geese) and getting shocked when they touched the fence (mainly the chickens) they are all now safe in their enclosure and making sure to avoid the fence!

This weekend we also went to see about some new additions to join us, of the non-feathered variety. I've made a few calls this morning and fingers crossed will be able to share very shortly.

We have been working every weekend for the last 9-10 weeks so August seems to have passed me in a bit of a flash. I'd had plans to sit and get plenty of stock made for my shop but that just hasn't happened. That being said, I have managed to a make a few items recently, including these:-

30 Days of Lists

I often see little groups or projects pop up online and I always think how nice it would be to be a part of them but that’s as far as it gets. I’m usually too worried about committing to something and letting the side down if life gets in the way and I’m unable to participate. So I was really excited to find 30 Days of Lists and its something even I can join in with!

30 Days of Lists is a collaboration between Kam of Campfire Chic, Amy of Lemon and Raspberry, and Justine of A New Beginning, they say:

Not everyone can make a mini scrapbook every week or an art journal page every night.

30 Days of Lists is our encouragement and challenge to you that you CAN journal just something every day – even something as small as a list.

You know how it is, one minute you sit down to do something and the next minute, you've forgotten what that something is. So before I forget, yet again, here are the fabrics I received in my swap!

These vintage pieces were from Abby at Bubs Bears:

And these were from Lil, whose blog link I seem to have misplaced. Sorry Lily! I recently changed my internet browser (long story, involving riddiculous amounts of software updates and losing important files and links!).

And these felts (and fabric!) are from Seamstar - this is the first time I've used them and they were really excellent, I ordered at lunchtime and they were delivered the next day!

I wasn't going to mention the events that have taken place in the UK this week but it can hardly be ignored. So all I shall say is this, wherever you are and whatever you may be doing, I hope you all have a safe and peaceful weekend x

Nearly There

I can't believe its been two months since we started putting the fence up. Its no exaggeration to say its been exhausting but, I must say, I've really enjoyed it! Since we started, we've spent nearly every Saturday and Sunday outside from early in the morning til early evening.

We've spent our weekends digging holes, hitting posts into the ground, drilling bits of wood together, hammering nails and I've lost count the amount of times I've walked up and down the garden.

We're so closed to being finished, I can't tell you how pleased I'll be once its done! Not only will I get my weekends back but the animals can run around til their hearts content.

We still have some work left to do, including adding the last small stretch of wires and chicken proofing the gates. We need to add mesh to the gates to stop them climbing through and to put something that drags underneath to stop them climbing under. I'm also of the opinion that something needs to go on top to stop them jumping on top of it (I know just how mischievous they are!) but the boyf isn't convinced. He will be ;)

Here's hoping we're nearly there...

What went wrong with Bunny?

Remember Scary test bunny and Scruffy bunny?

Well, I’ve had some bunny shapes cut out on my desk for months and this week I decided to tackle them. I can honestly say that I’m cured of any desire whatsoever to make bunnies. For now at least.

So, what went wrong with bunny? The fabric is a very soft cotton which kept catching and snagging. The ears are the same - as in the rough edge on the left ear should be facing the opposite way to that on the right. I also managed to leave an arm out, which meant unpicking the stitching (I use the term ‘unpicking’ lightly, scissors were involved).

Oh, and the face. The face! Two things with it. It looks creepy and I need to practice my machine embroidery! When I finally work out how to use the all-singing-all-dancing embroidery machine, one of the things I want to do is make a face! Button eyes just don’t do it for me.

None of this was helped by being able to hear my MiL humming the Go Compare advert over and over again (and yes, its now the only thing going around and around in my head). Still, good to be creative! Now to tackle some more of those outstanding projects....

Octopus

When my boyfriend first brought me my embroidery machine, I was really quite sceptical as to whether I'd use it or not.

I don't think I've quite got my monies worth yet but I'm working on it! One of the biggest problems I have is I'm simply not up to speed with all of the functions, which would probably be quite handy (ya think?!). I'm also not very good at judging the size something will turn out. So something which I think will be a cute badge turns out to be somewhat biggerr, like the octopus below (which, incidentally, needs tidying up, loose threads cut away etc).

That can means I tend to end up with odd embroidery pieces that start off with one project in mind and end up used for something else. So, to coin an old, overused phrase - practice makes perfect! I shall keep on plugging away, especially as I've just brought some new designs!

I'll share in due course...

PS - despite the octopus being a completely different size to that expected, he is still quite cute!

The charity shop came up trumps this weekend! I managed to pick up a few bits, but this is the one that stands out:

I'll be following some of these tips from A Thrifty Mrs before I do anything with it.

Whilst its not the colours/patterns that usually shout out to me, its been hand stitched and I can appreciate the work that's gone into it. Not only that, but it was the absolutely riddiculous price of £4.50! I KNOW, £4.50! I'm sure I can make a space for it somewhere ....

Scrummy new fabrics & Fabric Swap!

I’m in the process of making some new bunting! As you can see, its in my usual choice of florals.

As I cut these out last week, I got thinking about the fabrics I usually choose. Mostly, I tend to use florals, which strikes me as funny, really, as I don’t have much in the way of floral at home - I tend to keep things plain. Sometimes though, its good to shake things up and choose away from the norm. I think it helps stir up new ideas?

So, after what seems like an age of a fabric drought I did a spot of fabric shopping last week and this lovely lot turned up from Saints and Pinners and M is for Make!

Remember I asked in a previous post if anyone would be interested in a fabric swap? I didn't get as much interest in it as I'd hoped for but a few people said they'd like to take part, so here we go!

Lucky Horseshoes

Recently I've been spending rather a lot of time in the garden and this caught my eye:

Which got me thinking about others I've seen in the garden. There's a few, placed in old trees and on old walls.

And it got me curious as to why there's so many of them around. We live in a really old house, which was an old working farm. So that's the logical explanation? Perhaps they used to keep lots of horses (very likely) and would just leave the shoes where they fell?

Or perhaps previous occupiers over the last few hundred years were superstitious? I've been doing a spot of reading about it, I knew horseshoes were considered lucky by some but I wanted to know whether it made a difference which way they were hung up.? As with many superstitions it turns out different cultures have different thoughts.

Overall though, they used to be hung in and around homes to protect and attract good fortune to the family living there. Some people believe that if it is hung with the ends pointing upwards it acts as a container to store good luck, others believe that if its displayed with the ends hanging downwards that the good luck can flow out and into the home.

One of the things I love about our home is the history behind it and I love the thought of someone going around the garden and choosing various spots to place their horseshoes to protect their home and land. Perhaps they were of the 'it doesn't matter which way it sits' camp?

The never-ending fence

When you see this snippet of the garden as opposed to the whole thing, like I see everyday, it doesn't look like much but we're finally making progress. You wouldn't believe the problems we've had getting on with it though, from the cutting teeth on the post hole borer wearing down to the weather, its certainly taking us a while. The thing that gets me most though is that once the posts are in we then have to go around with the electric wiring .....

In the garden today

Wow-eee. I cannot believe how warm it is here in Norfolk today. Its been a mix of hot and humid and has finally started to cloud over so I'm keeping everything crossed that we get a thunderstorm to clear the humidity.

I managed to get some photos in the garden this afternoon, before my camera over-heated and decided it didn't want to work - I'm hoping its a temporary blip!

He started off watching the birds in the trees above but that was as far as it went.

Refreshing themselves.

Its too hot to run around.

Digging a dust bath.

I had actually popped outside to take some photos of a new bag I've made. I managed a handful of snaps before it succumbed to the heat (and I got covered in thunder flies!). I shall try again tomorrow!

Finally, a quick question for all you fabric addicts out there. Would any of you be interested in taking part in a fabric swap? My initial thoughts are that it would be from your existing stash and, say 2-3 fat quarters? Let me have your thoughts, if there's enough interest I shall organise!

What's catching your eye on Folksy at the moment?

New Website!

The title makes this sound so much more exciting than what it is! Originally I purchased my domain name and had it re-directed to my Folksy site. I've always preferred to have a 'proper' website link on a business card etc rather than the shop. What I didn't realise, until last week, was that by doing this, anyone that followed the link to purchase from my shop would be unable to actually do so. Its not something I fully understand but Folksy asked me to remove the re-direction to avoid further confusion for potential customers.

And so I was left with the choice of re-printing all of my cards or to set up a website. So I set up a website! Now, when people visit www.bluebellandrosie.co.uk they will have the choice of shopping with me on Folksy or Etsy (and anywhere else I might set up shop in the future!).

Problem solved!

Definitely a work in progress but I'm pleased with what I've achieved so far. And I cannot recommend Create highly enough.

The fence

Hasn't the weather been lovely recently? Its tied in quite nicely with some work we've just started in the garden.

We have some lovely flowers around the garden at the moment, including plenty of rose bushes.

When I'm doing a quick beak count during the afternoon, if I can't find one of the chickens, I know they are usually in one of several places. The current faves are on the vegetable patch, making sure they finish every last morsel of the rows of chard which they've already pecked their way through.

Looks like weeds, doesn't it?

And if they aren't there, often they'll be nestled in between the runner beans, having dug themselves a dustbath.

Its not just the chickens causing havoc though. The geese are rather partial to the bark on the trees. They were a bit heavy....beaked with this one:

A few weeks ago our bantam, Goldie, was run over on the road outside the house. Its the second time we've lost one on the road and so we've now taken the decision to fence off a large part of the garden for the chickens and geese. Up until now, it had only been me in favour of doing so but Goldie, combined with the fruit and veg being demolished, has changed everyone's minds.

And so, this week we've had four gates, eight gate posts and 250 fence posts delivered to join the metres-upon-metres of electric fencing we have. Its going to be a long old slog but it will be well worth it for peace of mind. Not only that but there's talk of more chickens and the possibility of hatching our own, as well as talk of other animals. I'll keep you updated :)

Dribs and Drabs

I'm still here!

At the moment, inspiration is coming in dribs and drabs. I've noticed that it happens now and again and, as frustrating as it is, I'm learning to live with it. Sometimes life and all those little things just get in the way! Stick with me whilst I'm working through it and if you have any tips for keeping inspired when life takes over, they'll be gratefully received!

Having said that, I have made a few bits recently, including this little cushion (and the inner), which was an attempt to use up some fabric remnants.

Another little campervan, again using up the scraps.

This cushion (you can find it for sale here). Notice the finally completed chair?! My boyf helped me to sand it down and stain in and although its a little bit darker than I was expecting, I'm very pleased with the result. Not sure I'm in a hurry to do another chair though!

It pays to be patient

I've been searching and searching for ages for some more plain wooden boxes. Not just any wooden boxes - you can get them anywhere - but boxes at the right price. Not such an easy task. Unless you want 500+ shipped from China.

My previous (and to remain unnamed I'm afraid) supplier has been out of stock for months. I've been going back and forth for at least 6 months and getting more and more angtsy that they haven't had them. I'd even been in contact with the head office to see if I could try and source them direct, with no luck.

So its no exaggeration to tell you I was ecstatic to find them back in stock at the weekend! Rather than grabbing my usual few I now have over 30 of them to be getting on with!

So now I can crack on with making more of these:

Car Booty

Ah. Car boots. Sometimes great, sometimes a waste of time. We went to Houghton Hall on Saturday, which was an experience. All stall holders are by invite only and there was quite a big mix of stalls.

I cam away with a large bundle of stamps and these two cupboards, which don't look that great at the moment:

I've started to sand down the cupboards but they've been put to once side whilst I decide what I'm going to do with them. Lets see how long that takes...

Loving the long weekend

I'm loving this bank holiday weekend! Friday was an easy day spent at home but yesterday we were out and about. First up was the carboot at Houghton Hall where we spent a good 2-3 hours walking around and picking up some buys (well, I did) - pics to follow later!

Then it was for a drive around the coast to see where we ended up. We attempted going to Burnham Market, which was completely packed so decided to give that a miss. On our way back through towards Hunstanton we stopped at Titchwell Nature Reserve. Simply stunning!

One word of advice: this weekend, whilst warm, has been incredibly windy. We were stupid enough to go without coats - out on the reserves you definitely need them. Its no exaggeration to say I had to hold my top down and when I got back to the car my hair was so windswept it took 5 minutes to pull the comb through the knots! The reserves lead to the stunning beach, its well worth a walk as the beach is empty, a rarity compared to Hunstanton and Wells when the weather's good!

You can see the wind rippling the water! I struggled to hold the camera!
